Routed signs are made by machining a message and/or design in a sign blank made of wood, sign foam or other material. Text or other graphics may be raised or depressed. The sign is then painted, usually using 2 or more colors. Sandblasted signs are similar, but instead of machining, material is removed by sandblasting. These signs are commonly used to identify a building, business, or real estate development, and may be installed on a wall, gate, or as part of a monument sign. They are often illuminated with floodlights if they are illuminated at all.
